'der Aufwand' and 'der Luxus' can both have to do with a lot of money, time, or special resources. 'Aufwand' describes how much work, time, money, or effort is needed for something. This can be positive, neutral, or too much. 'Luxus' describes something expensive or pleasant that is not necessarily needed, but brings comfort or enjoyment. The words can be confused when something is very elaborate and luxurious at the same time, for example a large celebration. As a guide: 'Aufwand' asks about the effort involved; 'Luxus' asks about the special comfort.
