This can happen in business, in politics, or also in court. 'Mediation' is a voluntary procedure outside of court. In it, a neutral third person helps so that the parties can find a solution themselves. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with disputes and solutions. The important point is: in 'Mediation', there is a mediating person; in a 'Verhandlung', the focus is on direct negotiation or a court proceeding.
