In fashion, 'Midi' (midi) is usually not used on its own, but as a modifying element in compounds like 'Midi-Kleid' (midi dress) or 'Midi-Rock' (midi skirt). The gender of the word then follows the base word: 'das Kleid' (the dress), 'der Rock' (the skirt).

In fashion, 'Midi' (midi) is part of a length system: 'Mini' (mini; short), 'Midi' (midi; medium length, down to the calf), and 'Maxi' (maxi; long, down to the ankle). The word is derived from 'medium' (middle).

In music technology, MIDI is often combined with words like 'MIDI-Kabel' (MIDI cable), 'MIDI-Controller' (MIDI controller), 'MIDI-Signal' (MIDI signal), or 'MIDI-Daten' (MIDI data). It always describes the type of connection or information.
