The word is made up of the prefix 'miss-' and the adjective 'verständlich' (understandable). The prefix 'miss-' means that something is wrong, bad, or negative. 'Missverständlich' (misleading/ambiguous) is therefore something that can easily be misunderstood.

'klar' and 'missverständlich' are opposites here. A clear statement is easy to understand and unambiguous. A 'missverständlich' statement can be misunderstood or interpreted in different ways. 'klar' fits when the information leaves no doubt. 'missverständlich' is used when the wording is not precise enough and problems can arise as a result.
