You can tell from the context whether the kitchen appliance or the person is meant. Words like 'Küche' (kitchen), 'Smoothie' (smoothie), or 'pürieren' (to purée) point to the appliance. Words like 'Konzert' (concert), 'Ton' (sound), 'DJ', or 'Mischpult' (mixing desk) point to the person.

In connection with the kitchen appliance, verbs like 'einschalten' (to turn on), 'benutzen' (to use), or 'reinigen' (to clean) are common. You put ingredients 'in den Mixer' (into the blender) or purée something 'mit dem Mixer' (with the blender).
Für die Suppe habe ich das Gemüse mit dem Mixer püriert.
For the soup, I puréed the vegetables with the blender.
DJ
'der DJ' and 'der Mixer' can both have to do with music and sound. A DJ selects music and plays it for an audience, for example in a club or at a party. A 'Mixer' can be a person who mixes sound or music; in this sense, the work is sometimes close to that of a DJ. In everyday language, however, 'Mixer' very often means a kitchen appliance. The words can therefore be confusing: a DJ can mix music, but a 'Mixer' is not automatically a DJ. For the person at a party, you normally say 'DJ'.
