Monolog vs Rede

speech / talk

'die Rede' and 'der Monolog' both have to do with one person speaking for a longer time. A 'Rede' is usually addressed to an audience and often has a clear occasion, for example a celebration, a meeting, or a lecture. A 'Monolog' means that only one person speaks at length. In theater and film, this can be a soliloquy, or in everyday life a long speech where others can hardly say anything. The words can be confused because in both cases one person speaks a lot. The difference is: 'Rede' emphasizes addressing others, while 'Monolog' emphasizes one-sided speaking.
