Participle as adjective
'Motiviert' (motivated) is the past participle of the verb 'motivieren' (to motivate). Like many participles in German, it is very often used as an adjective.
EXAMPLE
Ein motivierter Mitarbeiter leistet bessere Arbeit.
A motivated employee does better work.
Context clue
If 'motiviert' (motivated) describes a person, it refers to their inner drive. If it describes an action or decision, often with an adverb, it explains its cause or reason.
