Usage tips
Use without an article

For the pizza, we still need mozzarella and tomatoes.
Typical dishes
Mozzarella is a main ingredient in some very well-known Italian dishes. The best-known are the salad 'Tomate-Mozzarella' (tomato and mozzarella), also called 'Caprese', and as a topping on pizza.
EXAMPLE
Im Sommer esse ich gerne einen leichten Salat mit Tomate und Mozzarella.

Typical varieties
There are mainly two types: standard mozzarella is made from cow's milk. The higher-quality and more flavorful variety is 'Büffelmozzarella' (buffalo mozzarella), Italian 'Mozzarella di bufala', which is made from buffalo's milk.

Für ein besonderes Essen haben wir echten Büffelmozzarella gekauft.
For a special meal, we bought real buffalo mozzarella.

Mozzarella vs Frischkäse
cream cheese
'Frischkäse' and 'Mozzarella' are both types of cheese that do not ripen for long. That is why they can be confused. However, 'Frischkäse' is a general term and often means a soft, spreadable cheese that you put on bread or use for cooking. 'Mozzarella' is a specific Italian type of fresh cheese. It is usually available in balls, is soft, and is often used for salad, pizza, or hot dishes. Every mozzarella is a type of Frischkäse, but not every Frischkäse is mozzarella.
