The word 'nachhinein' is used almost exclusively in the fixed expression 'im Nachhinein' (in retrospect). It cannot stand alone.

The expression 'im Nachhinein' (in retrospect) can stand at the beginning of the sentence (position 1), which leads to inversion (verb in position 2). But it can also be placed in the middle of the sentence.

'danach' and 'im Nachhinein' both have to do with a later point in time. 'danach' simply describes that something happens later. It puts events in order. 'im Nachhinein' is used when you look back on something later and judge it or understand it differently. Learners may confuse the words because both refer to a time after an event. Remember: 'danach' says what happens next; 'im Nachhinein' says how something is evaluated later.
Im Nachhinein findet Herr Müller, dass die Entscheidung richtig war.
