'die Kommode' and 'der Nachttisch' are both small or medium-sized pieces of furniture that can be found in the bedroom. However, a 'Kommode' is mainly for storing clothing or linens and has several drawers. A 'Nachttisch' stands right next to the bed and is for things you need quickly at night or in the morning, for example a lamp, a book, or a glass of water. They can be confused because some bedside tables also have small drawers. What matters is the location and function: next to the bed, it is usually a 'Nachttisch'; for clothing, it is more likely a 'Kommode'.
