pachten

to lease

To use something, especially a plot of land or a business (e.g., a restaurant, a farm), for a specific period of time in exchange for regular payment, with the right to generate income from it. Unlike renting, making a profit is an essential part of the contract here.

pachten vs mieten

to rent / hire

'mieten' and 'pachten' both mean that you are allowed to use something for a certain period of time in exchange for regular payment. 'mieten' is the normal word for apartments, rooms, cars, or equipment. 'pachten' is used mainly for plots of land, restaurants, farms, or businesses. The important point is that you are often also allowed to generate income or profit from the thing, for example by selling fruit or running a restaurant. The words can be confusing because both work similarly to a contract with payment. For ordinary living arrangements or a car, 'mieten' fits; for land or a business that brings in income, 'pachten' fits.
