A form of medical treatment that aims to restore, improve, or maintain the body's ability to move and function, often after injuries, illnesses, or operations. It uses physical methods such as targeted exercises, massages, or heat treatments.

In everyday speech, the short form 'die Physio' is often used. This is more informal, but very common.

massage
'die Massage' and 'die Physiotherapie' can both have to do with treating the body. A massage is a specific treatment in which muscles are loosened by kneading, rubbing, or tapping. Physiotherapy is broader and more medical: you often do targeted exercises, train movements, or use various methods there, sometimes including massages. The words can be confused because a massage can be part of physiotherapy. If it is only about loosening the muscles, 'Massage' fits. If it is about medical treatment after pain, injury, or an operation, 'Physiotherapie' is more precise.
Nach der Knieoperation geht Paul zweimal pro Woche zur Physiotherapie.
