Pore vs Loch

hole

'das Loch' and 'die Pore' both refer to an opening or a small hollow space in a surface. 'Loch' is very general and can be small or large; you can often see it clearly. 'Pore' is much more specific and means a very small opening, especially in the skin or in materials such as wood, stone, or filters. Learners may confuse the words because a pore is actually also a kind of very small hole. In everyday language, however, you do not call every small hole a 'Pore'. 'Pore' fits when you are talking about skin or a fine material structure.
