A range in which the prices for certain products or services fall. Goods are often divided into different price ranges, e.g., low, medium, or high.

The word is made up of 'der Preis' (the price) and 'die Klasse' (the class/category). The '-s-' in the middle is a so-called linking element that connects the two words. Literally, it is a 'Klasse' (class/category) determined by the price.

'das Preisniveau' and 'die Preisklasse' both describe how high prices are. The difference is in the perspective. 'Das Preisniveau' means the general level of prices, for example in a country or in a city. 'Die Preisklasse' means a specific range for a product or service, for example cheap, mid-range, or expensive. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with price categories. When talking about the economy or general price increases, 'Preisniveau' is more natural. When classifying a car, a hotel, or a mobile phone by price, 'Preisklasse' fits better.
