Privatdozent
A scholar who has completed a habilitation and has the authorization to teach at a university, but does not hold a professorship. The abbreviation is PD or Priv.-Doz.

The word consists of 'Privat' (private) and 'Dozent' (lecturer at a university). Here, 'Privat' does not mean that the person teaches at a private university. It is an official academic title at state universities for instructors without a professorship.

'der Professor' and 'der Privatdozent' both belong to the university world and can teach and conduct research there. The important difference is academic status. A professor holds a professorship and therefore has a fixed or official professor position. A Privatdozent has completed a habilitation and is allowed to teach at a university, but does not hold a professorship. Learners may confuse the words because both people can give lectures. But when it comes to the title or the position, the difference is important.
