A unit of measurement that denotes one thousandth (1/1000 or 0.1%). It is mainly used to indicate the alcohol level in the blood.
Die Polizei hat bei dem Fahrer einen Wert von 0,8 Promille gemessen.

The word 'Promille' comes from Latin and means 'pro mille', that is, 'per thousand' or 'of a thousand'. It therefore denotes a one-thousandth share, while 'Prozent' (percent) denotes a one-hundredth share.

One per mille is ten times less than one percent.
When 'Promille' is used with a number, it usually appears in the singular and without an article. This also applies to values above one.

In connection with blood alcohol content, 'Promille' is often used with the verbs 'haben' (to have), 'messen' (to measure), or 'feststellen' (to determine). A common situation is being caught 'mit ... Promille am Steuer' (with ... per mille behind the wheel).

Prozent and Promille are units of measurement for proportions, but Prozent refers to hundredths and Promille to thousandths. For alcohol, the proportion in a drink is often given in Prozent, while the alcohol level in the blood is mainly given in Promille. The appropriate unit therefore depends on the proportion in question.
