'der Strich' and 'die Prostitution' can be connected in the area of paid sex work, but they are used very differently. 'Prostitution' is the factual word for the topic or the trade. In this sense, 'Strich' occurs almost only in the fixed expression 'auf den Strich gehen' (to work the streets) and usually means street prostitution. Learners may confuse the words because both can point to the same topic. The important point is: you do not simply say 'der Strich' as a normal factual word for the whole topic; for that, use 'Prostitution'.
