You can easily recognize the meaning of 'Quad' (quad) from context. If the sentences talk about engines, driving, or off-road terrain, the vehicle is meant. If they are about universities or buildings, the courtyard is meant.

When referring to the vehicle, the most common verbs are 'fahren' (to drive/ride) and 'mieten' (to rent). You say 'Quad fahren' (to ride a quad) or 'mit dem Quad fahren' (to go by quad).
Am Strand kann man Quads für eine Stunde mieten.
At the beach, you can rent quads for an hour.

'Hof' and 'Quad' can both mean an open area surrounded by buildings. 'Hof' is the normal German word for such an area, for example in a residential building or at a school. 'Quad' in this meaning is much more specific and is used mainly for a square courtyard at universities or colleges, especially in English-speaking contexts. Learners may confuse the words because both can describe a courtyard. In everyday German, however, people almost always say 'Hof'. 'Quad' is only appropriate in certain campus contexts.
