A specially designated area on a highway or country road that gives drivers a place to take a break. It usually has parking spaces and often also toilets and picnic tables.

'Rastplatz' is made up of 'die Rast' (break, rest) and 'der Platz' (place). So it is literally a place where you take a rest. The word 'Rast' is related to the verb 'rasten' (to rest).

'der Parkplatz' and 'der Rastplatz' can both be places where you stop briefly. The most important difference is the purpose. A 'Parkplatz' is an area where you park a vehicle, for example in front of a supermarket or in the city. A 'Rastplatz' is a place to rest, often on a highway or along a hiking trail. There may also be parking spaces there, but the break is the main focus. The words can be especially confusing when traveling: you often park at a 'Rastplatz', but not every 'Parkplatz' is a 'Rastplatz'.
