Colloquial short form
'Raus' is the colloquial and very common short form of 'heraus' or 'hinaus' (out). In written language or formal situations, you should use the long form.

Use with verbs
As an indication of direction, 'raus' is often combined with verbs of movement, e.g. 'rausgehen' (to go out), 'rauskommen' (to come out), 'rausfahren' (to drive out), or used as the separable part of a verb.

He has already taken the trash out.
State with 'sein'
In the meanings 'veröffentlicht' (released) or 'ausgeschieden' (eliminated), 'raus' is used together with the verb 'sein' (to be) to describe a state.
