In Judaism and in some Christian communities, the seventh day of the week (Saturday), which is considered a holy day of rest and on which certain kinds of work are forbidden.

„Samstag“ simply names the sixth day of the week. „Der Sabbat“, on the other hand, refers to the religious day of rest that, in Judaism and some Christian communities, is associated with specific prohibitions on work. Use „Samstag“ when talking about the date and „Sabbat“ when talking about the holy day of rest.
