An alcoholic drink made from wine with carbonation, often drunk at celebrations. It is the German or Austrian version of sparkling wine.

Sekt is the typical drink for celebrations in Germany. People often toast with it at birthdays, on New Year's Eve, or at an official reception (Sektempfang).

Special verbs are often used in connection with Sekt. You 'öffnet' (open) a bottle of Sekt, 'schenkt' it 'ein' (pour it) into tall, narrow glasses, and then 'stößt' with other people 'an' (toast).

When buying or ordering Sekt, adjectives describing the taste are important. The most common are 'trocken' (dry, not sweet), 'halbtrocken' (semi-dry, somewhat sweet), and 'brut' (very dry).
Ich persönlich trinke am liebsten trockenen Sekt.
Personally, I prefer dry sparkling wine.

Both words can refer to a sparkling wine served at a celebration. „Der Sekt“ is the general German or Austrian term for this type of sparkling wine, whereas „der Champagner“ specifically means sparkling wine from Champagne. When the origin is not relevant, use „Sekt“; when it comes from this region, use „Champagner“.
