Usage tips

Compare with

confusable

sich vs dich

you

'dich' and 'sich' can both be used as the object of an action, but they refer to different people. 'dich' is used when you are speaking directly to someone with the informal 'du' form and that person is the target of the action. 'sich' is used when someone does something to or for themselves, that is, with 'er', 'sie', 'es', plural 'sie', or the formal form of address 'Sie'. The confusion arises because both often appear with similar verbs, for example 'waschen' (to wash), 'freuen' (to be pleased), or 'vorstellen' (to imagine / introduce). Remember: with 'du' it is 'dich'; with 'er/sie/Sie' it is usually 'sich'.
