'die Art' and 'die Species' can mean the same thing in biology: a group of living beings that belong together and can reproduce with one another. 'die Art' is the normal German word and is also understandable outside biology. 'die Species' is a technical term and sounds more scientific. Learners may confuse the words because both refer to the same biological unit. In normal texts, 'die Art' is usually more natural; in very technical texts, 'die Species' can fit.
