'stadtauswärts' and 'stadteinwärts' both indicate a direction in the city, but they are opposites. 'stadtauswärts' means away from the city center, toward the outskirts or out of the city. 'stadteinwärts' means toward the city center. The words can easily be confused because they are built in a similar way. Pay attention to 'aus' and 'ein': 'auswärts' leads outward, while 'einwärts' leads inward.
