The name 'Stickstoff' (nitrogen) comes from 'ersticken' (to suffocate) and 'Stoff' (substance/material). In the past, people discovered that a candle flame goes out in pure nitrogen and that living beings cannot breathe in it—the substance therefore 'suffocates' life and fire.
Die Luft, die wir atmen, besteht zu etwa 78 % aus Stickstoff.
The air we breathe consists of about 78% nitrogen.
'Stickstoff' (nitrogen) is a technical term from chemistry, biology, and agriculture. In everyday life, people rarely talk about it unless the topic is fertilizer, nutrition, or the environment.
Im Chemieunterricht haben wir die Eigenschaften von Stickstoff besprochen.
In chemistry class, we discussed the properties of nitrogen.
Common combinations are 'reich an Stickstoff sein' (to be rich in nitrogen), 'Stickstoff binden' (to fix nitrogen, which plants do), or 'mit Stickstoff düngen' (to fertilize with nitrogen). In technical texts, the chemical symbol 'N' is often used.
Hülsenfrüchte wie Bohnen und Linsen sind reich an Stickstoff.
Legumes such as beans and lentils are rich in nitrogen.
