A penalty in soccer in which a player is allowed to shoot at the opposing goal undisturbed from eleven meters away. It is awarded after a rule violation by the defending team in its own penalty area.

'die Strafe' and 'der Strafstoß' both have to do with a consequence for breaking a rule. 'Strafe' is the general word and can be used in many areas, for example in law, at school, or in everyday life. 'Strafstoß' is much more specific: in soccer, it is a special shot at the goal after a foul in the penalty area. That is why not every 'Strafe' can be called a 'Strafstoß'. 'Strafstoß' only fits in a soccer context, while 'Strafe' is much broader.
