The device on a camera that you look through to determine the image frame.

The word 'Sucher' (viewfinder/seeker) is derived from the verb 'suchen' (to search). The ending '-er' in German can refer both to a person who does something and to a device that performs a particular function. This explains the two meanings: the person who searches, and the device with which one searches.

In the technical meaning, the context is usually photography. Typical adjectives are 'optischer Sucher' (optical viewfinder) or 'elektronischer Sucher' (electronic viewfinder). The most common verb in this context is 'durch den Sucher schauen' (to look through the viewfinder).

When 'Sucher' (seeker) describes a person, it is often followed by the preposition 'nach' with the dative to name the object of the search. This usage often has a philosophical or spiritual connotation.

'der Bildschirm' and 'der Sucher' can both occur on cameras or technical devices, but they are not the same thing. On a 'Bildschirm', you see an electronic image, for example on the back of a camera or on a computer. You look through the 'Sucher' on a camera to choose the right image frame. The confusion is especially easy when a camera has both. If you are looking at a glowing surface, you say 'Bildschirm'. If you are looking through a small part of the camera, you say 'Sucher'.
