'Diskussion' is the more general word and fits in school, at the office, in the family, or in politics. 'Talk' is used mainly for a talk show or panel discussion in the media, for example on television, radio, or at an event. The words can be confused because people often discuss things in a 'Talk'. But when it is not about a media format, 'Diskussion' is usually more natural.
