Usage tips
Context clue
You can easily recognize the meaning from the context. In everyday life and at the drugstore, it always refers to the hygiene product for menstruation. In a medical context at a doctor's office or in a hospital, however, it refers to wound packing.
EXAMPLE
Kannst du auf dem Weg nach Hause Tampons kaufen?
Can you buy tampons on the way home?
Typical verbs (everyday)
In connection with the menstrual product, the most common verbs are: 'einen Tampon benutzen' (to use a tampon), 'einen Tampon einführen' (to insert a tampon), 'einen Tampon wechseln' (to change a tampon), or 'einen Tampon entfernen' (to remove a tampon).
EXAMPLE
Man sollte einen Tampon nicht länger als acht Stunden tragen.
You should not wear a tampon for longer than eight hours.
Medical terminology
The meaning 'Wundbausch' (wound packing) is almost exclusively medical terminology. Here, the tampon or packing is 'eingesetzt' (inserted) by medical staff in order to 'stillen' (stop) bleeding.
EXAMPLE
Der Zahnarzt legte einen kleinen Tampon auf die Wunde.
The dentist placed a small piece of packing on the wound.

Tampon vs Binde
bandage / pad / blindfold
'Binde' and 'Tampon' can both be hygiene products used during menstruation. That is why learners can easily confuse the words. The difference is how they are used: a 'Binde' lies in the underwear and absorbs blood externally. A 'Tampon' is inserted into the body and absorbs the blood there. In this context, 'Binde' does not mean a bandage for a wound. When talking about menstruation, you should distinguish exactly which product is meant.
Tampon
Im Schwimmbad benutzt Maria lieber einen Tampon.
At the swimming pool, Maria prefers to use a tampon.
Binde
Sofia hat eine Binde in ihrer Tasche, falls ihre Periode beginnt.
Sofia has a sanitary pad in her bag in case her period starts.
