The ending '-logie' (-logy) comes from Greek and refers to a science or field of study. When you see this ending, you know it has to do with an academic subject or a scientific field, as in 'Biologie' (biology) or 'Psychologie' (psychology).

When 'Theologie' (theology) is mentioned as a field of study, you generally do not use an article. You say 'er studiert Theologie' (he is studying theology), not 'er studiert die Theologie'.

'Theologie' (theology) is often combined with verbs like 'studieren' (to study) or 'lehren' (to teach). The specific religious denomination is also often named, for example 'evangelische Theologie' (Protestant theology), 'katholische Theologie' (Catholic theology), or 'islamische Theologie' (Islamic theology).

mythology
'die Theologie' and 'die Mythologie' sound similar, and both have to do with religion, gods, or beliefs. Still, they mean different things. 'Theologie' is the academic study of a religion, often the Christian faith, its scriptures, and its teachings. 'Mythologie' means either the myths and stories of gods in a culture, or the academic study of such myths. The risk of confusion comes from the fact that both words appear in classes, university studies, or books about religion. When it is about religious doctrine, 'Theologie' fits. When it is about legends, stories of gods, and myths, 'Mythologie' fits.
