The word is composed of 'Treibhaus' (greenhouse) and 'Gas' (gas). A 'Treibhaus' (greenhouse) is a glass house that stores heat so that plants can grow. A 'Treibhausgas' (greenhouse gas) works figuratively like such a house for the whole Earth and contributes to warming.
Kohlendioxid ist das bekannteste Treibhausgas.
Carbon dioxide is the best-known greenhouse gas.
In connection with greenhouse gases, the verbs 'ausstoßen' (to emit), 'emittieren' (to emit), 'reduzieren' (to reduce), and 'vermeiden' (to avoid) are often used. These describe how the gases are handled in the context of climate protection.
Viele Länder haben sich verpflichtet, weniger Treibhausgase auszustoßen.
Many countries have committed to emitting fewer greenhouse gases.
Common and fixed formulations are 'der Ausstoß von Treibhausgasen' (the emission of greenhouse gases) or 'die Emissionen von Treibhausgasen' (greenhouse gas emissions). The word is very often used in the plural because people usually talk about different gases.
Der Ausstoß von Treibhausgasen durch die Industrie ist ein großes Problem.
The emission of greenhouse gases by industry is a major problem.
