Treibhausgas vs Emission

emission

'Emission' and 'Treibhausgas' both often appear in texts about climate and the environment. But they do not mean the same thing. A 'Treibhausgas' is a specific gas, for example carbon dioxide or methane, that contributes to the warming of the Earth. 'Emission' means the release of such substances into the environment. The words can be confused because people often talk about 'Emissionen von Treibhausgasen' (emissions of greenhouse gases). The simple difference is: the greenhouse gas is the substance; the emission is the release or the amount released.

Visual example for Emission
Treibhausgas

Methan ist ein starkes Treibhausgas.

Methane is a strong greenhouse gas.

Emission

Durch weniger Flugreisen sinkt die Emission von Kohlendioxid.

With fewer air trips, the emission of carbon dioxide decreases.
