Two meanings
The context determines the meaning. If people are talking about sports, fans, or teams, it means the sports shirt. If they are talking about fabrics, sewing, or the material composition of clothing, it means the elastic fabric.

Use in sports
In a sports context, typical combinations are 'ein Trikot tragen' (to wear a jersey), 'ein Trikot kaufen' (to buy a jersey), or 'das Trikot einer Mannschaft' (a team's jersey). The player's number on the back is also often mentioned.
