The state in which the demands placed on a person exceed their mental, physical, or emotional abilities and lead to stress, exhaustion, or failure.

The word comes from the verb 'überfordern' (to overwhelm / to overburden). The prefix 'über-' means 'too much' here, and 'fordern' means 'to demand'. 'Überforderung' (being overwhelmed) is therefore literally the state in which too much is demanded of someone.

Common combinations are 'ständige Überforderung' (constant overload) or 'emotionale/geistige Überforderung' (emotional/mental overwhelm). You can 'unter Überforderung leiden' (suffer from being overwhelmed), or a situation can 'zu Überforderung führen' (lead to overwhelm).

'der Druck' and 'die Überforderung' can both have to do with stress and excessive demands. 'Druck' more often describes pressure from outside: there are expectations, deadlines, or tasks. 'Überforderung' describes the state when these demands become too much and a person can no longer cope with them well. So pressure can lead to being overwhelmed, but it is not automatically the same as being overwhelmed. If someone is still managing, you would more likely speak of 'Druck'; if it really becomes too much, 'Überforderung' fits better.
