A state in which there is no agreement of opinions or intentions between several people or groups; disagreement or discord.

The word consists of the prefix 'Un-' (a negation) and the noun 'Einigkeit' (unity / agreement). 'Einigkeit' means agreement. So 'Uneinigkeit' is literally the state in which there is no agreement.

'Uneinigkeit' is often used with the verbs 'herrschen' (to prevail / exist) or 'bestehen' (to exist) to describe a state of disagreement. Both verbs are very common in this context.

To name the topic of the disagreement, you use the preposition 'über' (about / over) with the accusative. You say 'Uneinigkeit über etwas' (disagreement about something).

argument / dispute
'der Streit' and 'die Uneinigkeit' both have to do with differing opinions. 'der Streit' usually describes an active argument or dispute: people speak loudly, contradict each other, or become emotional. 'die Uneinigkeit' describes more the state of not being in agreement. It does not have to involve loud or open arguing. The words can be confused because disagreement often can lead to an argument. If you mean the conflict as a conversation or confrontation, 'Streit' fits. If you only want to say that there is no shared opinion, 'Uneinigkeit' is more precise.
