A fixed unit of time, usually 45 or 90 minutes, during which a particular subject is taught at a school or another educational institution.

The word is made up of 'der Unterricht' (instruction/teaching) and 'die Stunde' (hour/period). The 's' in the middle is a linking s that connects the two parts. Literally, it is therefore a 'period of instruction'.
Die erste Unterrichtsstunde beginnt um acht Uhr.

Common verbs used with this word are 'eine Unterrichtsstunde haben' (to have a lesson), 'eine Unterrichtsstunde fällt aus' (a lesson is canceled), or 'eine Unterrichtsstunde vorbereiten' (to prepare a lesson).

In the German school system, a classic 'Unterrichtsstunde' (lesson) traditionally lasts 45 minutes. Increasingly, however, double periods lasting 90 minutes are also held.

'die Stunde' and 'die Unterrichtsstunde' can mean the same thing in a school or course context: a single unit in which learning takes place. 'die Stunde' is shorter and very common in everyday language when the context is clear. 'die Unterrichtsstunde' is more precise because it immediately shows that it is about teaching, not about 60 minutes. The confusion arises because 'Stunde' can also be a normal unit of time. If it is not clear whether time or school is meant, 'Unterrichtsstunde' is clearer.

The lesson starts ten minutes later today.
