A fixed unit of time, usually 45 or 90 minutes, during which a particular subject is taught at a school or another educational institution.

The word is made up of 'der Unterricht' (instruction/teaching) and 'die Stunde' (hour/period). The 's' in the middle is a linking s that connects the two parts. Literally, it is therefore a 'period of instruction'.

In the German school system, a classic 'Unterrichtsstunde' (lesson) traditionally lasts 45 minutes. Increasingly, however, double periods lasting 90 minutes are also held.

Stunde and Unterrichtsstunde can both refer to a single teaching unit. Unterrichtsstunde explicitly identifies the activity as Unterricht, while Stunde takes on this meaning only from the school or course context. Without clear context, Unterrichtsstunde is therefore more unambiguous.

Because of the field trip, the first lesson is canceled tomorrow.
