A measure in statistics that describes the dispersion of data values around their mean. It is the square of the standard deviation.
example
The analysis showed a high variance in the group's test results.
Usage tips
Word family
'Varianz' (variance) belongs to the word family of 'variieren' (to vary, change, alternate) and 'die Variante' (the variant). All of these words have the Latin root for 'different' or 'changeable'.
EXAMPLE
The prices for the product vary greatly depending on the provider.
Context clue
You can recognize the statistical meaning from words like 'Daten' (data), 'Mittelwert' (mean), or 'berechnen' (to calculate). The more general meaning of deviation is often used in connection with comparisons of opinions, reports, or statements.
EXAMPLE
For the study, we have to calculate the variance of the measured values.
Register
In statistics, 'Varianz' (variance) is a precisely defined technical term. Outside this field, the word is rarely used with this precise mathematical meaning.
EXAMPLE
In statistics class, we learn how to determine variance and standard deviation.
Sentence structure and use
In the meaning of 'Abweichung' (deviation), the preposition 'zwischen' (between) is often used to name the things that do not agree: 'die Varianz zwischen A und B' (the variance between A and B).
EXAMPLE
The variance between the plan and reality was surprisingly large.

Varianz vs Differenz
difference
'die Differenz' and 'die Varianz' can both have to do with differences between values. 'Differenz' usually means the direct difference between two numbers or values. 'Varianz' is used especially in statistics when describing how strongly many values are spread around a mean. In a more general sense, 'Varianz' can also mean a deviation between things, but it sounds much more technical. The words can be confused because both have to do with deviations. As a guide: two values have a 'Differenz'; many data values can have a high or low 'Varianz'.
Varianz
In der Statistikaufgabe berechnet Mehmet die Varianz der Testergebnisse.
In the statistics exercise, Mehmet calculates the variance of the test results.
Differenz
The difference between the two measurements is smaller than expected.
