Usage tips
Word family
'Der Verbrauch' (consumption) is the noun for the verb 'verbrauchen' (to consume/use up). It describes the result of the action: the amount of a resource that has been used up.
EXAMPLE
Wir müssen unseren Wasserverbrauch reduzieren, also verbrauchen wir weniger Wasser.
We have to reduce our water consumption, so we use less water.
Two constructions
To say what is being consumed, there are two common patterns: using 'von' (der Verbrauch von Energie — the consumption of energy) or forming a compound noun (der Energieverbrauch — energy consumption).
EXAMPLE
Der Verbrauch von Papier ist in unserem Büro sehr hoch.
The consumption of paper in our office is very high.
Typical adjectives
'Verbrauch' (consumption) is often combined with adjectives that describe the amount. Typical ones are 'hoch' (high), 'niedrig' (low), 'durchschnittlich' (average), 'gestiegen' (increased), or 'gesunken' (decreased).
EXAMPLE
Das neue Auto hat einen sehr niedrigen Benzinverbrauch.
The new car has very low gasoline consumption.
Mostly singular
As a rule, 'Verbrauch' (consumption) is used as an uncountable noun in the singular. The plural 'die Verbräuche' is very rare and is used almost only in technical specialist contexts.
EXAMPLE
Der Energieverbrauch der privaten Haushalte ist im letzten Jahr gesunken.
The energy consumption of private households decreased last year.

Verbrauch vs Produktion
production
'die Produktion' and 'der Verbrauch' form a contrast when quantities are involved. 'die Produktion' describes how much is produced, or the fact that something is produced. 'der Verbrauch' describes how much of a resource, food, or drink is used or used up. So you can say: a factory produces goods, but people, machines, or households consume energy, water, or products. 'Verbrauch' fits especially well when something becomes less because it is being used.
Verbrauch
Im Winter ist der Verbrauch von Heizenergie in vielen Wohnungen höher.
In winter, heating energy consumption is higher in many apartments.
Produktion
Nach dem Umbau ist die Produktion in der Fabrik wieder schneller.
After the renovation, production in the factory is faster again.
