(Formal) A phrase meaning “as is being reported” or “as it is said.” It refers to information that is circulating but has not yet been officially confirmed.
Wie aus Regierungskreisen verlautet, soll das Gesetz noch dieses Jahr verabschiedet werden.

The verb 'verlauten' is almost never used on its own. In practice, it occurs only in the two fixed expressions 'etwas verlauten lassen' (to announce something / to let something be known) and 'wie verlautet' (as reported). Learn these as fixed units.

These expressions belong to formal language and are mainly used in the news, in politics, or in official company communications. In normal everyday conversation, they sound very unnatural and stiff.

The construction 'verlauten lassen' is often connected with a 'dass' (that) clause. The subject of the sentence is the person or institution that announces the information.

Wie es heißt and wie verlautet both convey widely circulated information that has not yet been confirmed. Wie es heißt is an ordinary reporting expression. Wie verlautet serves the same function, but sounds more formal and is especially suited to official or journalistic reports.
