Usage tips
Word structure
'Verlinken' (to link) is a modern verb derived from the noun 'der Link' (the link), which comes from English. The prefix 'ver-' is used here to form a verb from the noun.
EXAMPLE
Der Link in der E-Mail funktioniert nicht.
The link in the email doesn't work.
Inseparable verb
The verb 'verlinken' (to link) is inseparable. The prefix 'ver-' remains firmly attached to the verb stem in all sentence forms and tenses.
EXAMPLE
Er hat den neuen Blogbeitrag auf seiner Startseite verlinkt.
He linked the new blog post on his homepage.
Sentence structure and usage
You always link an accusative object with 'verlinken' (to link). Often, a preposition is also used to specify where the link is placed, e.g. 'etwas auf einer Webseite verlinken' (to link something on a website) or 'etwas in einem Dokument verlinken' (to link something in a document).
EXAMPLE
Die Autorin verlinkt alle Quellen am Ende des Artikels.
The author links all sources at the end of the article.

verlinken vs verbinden
to connect / to bandage
'verbinden' and 'verlinken' both have to do with a connection. But 'verbinden' is much more general: you can connect cables, devices, routes, or even a phone call. 'verlinken' is used only in the digital sphere, when you insert a clickable link in a text, on a website, or in an email. Learners may confuse the words because a link is also a kind of connection. In practice: for technology and real-world things, 'verbinden' usually fits; for clickable internet links, 'verlinken' fits.
