Word formation
Adjectives for nationalities in German are often formed by adding the ending '-isch' to the name of the country. This turns 'Vietnam' into the adjective 'vietnamesisch' (Vietnamese).
EXAMPLE
Die italienische Flagge hat die Farben Grün, Weiß und Rot.
The Italian flag has the colors green, white, and red.
Lowercase spelling
Adjectives derived from geographical names and ending in '-isch' are written in lowercase in German. Proper names are an exception.
EXAMPLE
Ich liebe die vietnamesische Suppe „Pho“.
I love the Vietnamese soup 'Pho'.
Use as a language
When the word refers to the language, it is used as a noun and capitalized. You can say 'ich spreche Vietnamesisch' (I speak Vietnamese) or 'das Vietnamesische ist eine tonale Sprache' (Vietnamese is a tonal language).
