The official deputy of the federal chancellor in the government of the Federal Republic of Germany or Austria.

'der Kanzler' and 'der Vizekanzler' both belong to the government and are therefore easy to confuse. 'Der Kanzler' is the head of government. 'Der Vizekanzler' is the chancellor's official deputy. So the word 'Vize-' shows that this person is not the chancellor themself, but takes over as a representative when necessary. When you are talking about the most important person in the government, 'Kanzler' fits. When you mean the deputy role, 'Vizekanzler' is more precise.
