The article changes with the case; it is shown in colour.
The word is a compound of 'der Wähler' (voter) and 'die Stimme' (vote/voice). So it describes exactly the vote that a voter casts in an election.
Die Oppositionspartei hofft, bei der nächsten Wahl mehr Wählerstimmen zu bekommen.
The opposition party hopes to get more votes in the next election.
The most important verb in this context is 'abgeben' (to cast/submit). As a voter, you 'gibt man seine Stimme ab' (cast your vote). Parties, on the other hand, can 'gewinnen' (win), 'verlieren' (lose), or 'sammeln' (collect) votes.
Jeder wahlberechtigte Bürger kann seine Wählerstimme abgeben.
Every eligible citizen can cast their vote.
In the singular ('die Wählerstimme' — the vote), the word usually refers to the individual act of voting. In the plural ('die Wählerstimmen' — the votes), you talk about the result or the totality of votes being fought for.
Seine Wählerstimme war entscheidend für den Sieg des Kandidaten.
His vote was decisive for the candidate's victory.
