Usage tips
Word structure
The word is a combination of the verb 'wahrnehmen' (to perceive) and the ending '-bar'. The ending '-bar' means that something is possible, similar to '-able' in English. 'Wahrnehmbar' (perceptible) therefore literally means 'something that one can perceive'.
EXAMPLE
Für das menschliche Ohr sind diese hohen Töne nicht wahrnehmbar.
These high tones are not perceptible to the human ear.
Typical collocations
'Wahrnehmbar' (perceptible) is often combined with adverbs that describe the degree of recognizability. Common combinations are 'kaum wahrnehmbar' (barely perceptible), 'deutlich wahrnehmbar' (clearly perceptible), 'klar wahrnehmbar' (clearly perceptible), or 'schwer wahrnehmbar' (hard to perceive).
EXAMPLE
Nach dem Regen war eine kaum wahrnehmbare Verbesserung der Luftqualität zu spüren.
After the rain, a barely perceptible improvement in the air quality could be felt.
Sentence structure with 'für'
To indicate for whom something is perceptible, you use the preposition 'für' followed by the accusative. This construction is very common.
EXAMPLE
Die Veränderung war nur für Experten wahrnehmbar.
The change was perceptible only to experts.

wahrnehmbar vs sichtbar
visible
'sichtbar' and 'wahrnehmbar' both mean that you can notice something. 'sichtbar' refers mainly to seeing: you can recognize something with your eyes. 'wahrnehmbar' is broader and can also refer to hearing, feeling, smelling, or noticing something in a general way. A sound, a smell, or a change can therefore be 'wahrnehmbar', but not necessarily 'sichtbar'. Learners may confuse the words because both can mean 'recognizable'. In practical terms: for the eyes, 'sichtbar' is usually more precise. For all the senses or for a general impression, 'wahrnehmbar' fits better.
wahrnehmbar
Nach dem Öffnen der Flasche war der Geruch sofort wahrnehmbar.
After opening the bottle, the smell was immediately noticeable.
sichtbar
Der Preis steht sichtbar auf dem Schild neben der Tür.
The price is clearly visible on the sign next to the door.
