A lake can be in the city, in the mountains, or in the countryside. 'der Waldsee' is more specific: it is located in a forest or directly surrounded by forest. Learners may confuse the words because a forest lake is also a lake. If the location in the forest is important, 'Waldsee' fits. If it is only about the water itself, 'See' is enough.
