Usage tips
Word structure
The verb is made up of 'wieder' (again) and 'entdecken' (to discover). The meaning is therefore very logical: to rediscover something for yourself that you already knew or had.
EXAMPLE
Nach langer Zeit habe ich meine Leidenschaft für das Klavierspielen wiederentdeckt.
After a long time, I rediscovered my passion for playing the piano.
Separable verb
'Wiederentdecken' (to rediscover) is a separable verb. The prefix 'wieder' stands at the end in a main clause. In a subordinate clause, the whole verb stands at the end, and in the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' stands in the middle.
EXAMPLE
Er entdeckt seine alte Heimatstadt gerade neu für sich wieder.
He is rediscovering his old hometown for himself right now.
Typical objects
The verb is often used with abstract things that one had lost or forgotten. Typical objects are 'eine Leidenschaft' (a passion), 'ein Hobby' (a hobby), 'die Liebe zu etwas' (the love of something), or 'eine Fähigkeit' (an ability).
EXAMPLE
Im Urlaub am Meer hat sie ihre Freude am Schwimmen wiederentdeckt.
On vacation by the sea, she rediscovered her joy in swimming.

wiederentdecken vs vergessen
to forget
'vergessen' and 'wiederentdecken' form a contrast here in how one deals with memories or things. With 'vergessen', something is no longer in memory or is no longer paid attention to. 'Wiederentdecken' means that you find something again later or remember it again. This can be a place, an object, an ability, or a feeling. So the difference is the direction: 'vergessen' removes something from conscious memory, while 'wiederentdecken' brings it back.
wiederentdecken
Nach vielen Jahren hat Maria ihre Freude am Zeichnen wiederentdeckt.
After many years, Maria rediscovered her joy in drawing.
vergessen
Zu Hause vergesse ich oft, wo ich meine Schlüssel hingelegt habe.
