The compass direction from which the wind is blowing. It is usually given using the cardinal or intercardinal directions (e.g. north, southwest) or in degrees.

The word is a simple compound made up of 'der Wind' (the wind) and 'die Richtung' (the direction). So it describes exactly what it means: the direction of the wind.

An important point: The wind direction always indicates where the wind comes from, not where it is blowing to. The preposition for this is 'aus' (from). A 'Westwind' (west wind) is therefore wind that comes from the west.

In connection with 'Windrichtung' (wind direction), the verbs 'sich ändern' (to change) or 'drehen' (to shift/turn) are often used. You can also 'bestimmen' (determine) or 'messen' (measure) the wind direction.

'Windrichtung' and 'Windgeschwindigkeit' both belong to weather vocabulary and describe the wind. But they do not mean the same thing. 'Windrichtung' tells you which compass direction the wind comes from, for example from the west or northeast. 'Windgeschwindigkeit' tells you how fast or strong the wind is blowing, for example 40 kilometers per hour. The words can be confused because both are often mentioned together in weather reports. The practical question helps: 'Where is the wind coming from?' is the 'Windrichtung'. 'How fast is the wind blowing?' is the 'Windgeschwindigkeit'.
