Ich lese am Sonntag gerne in Ruhe die Wochenzeitung, um mich über die Ereignisse der letzten Tage zu informieren.
On Sundays, I like to read the weekly newspaper in peace to catch up on the events of the last few days.
Usage tips
Word composition
The word is made up of 'Woche' (week) and 'Zeitung' (newspaper), connected by the linking -n. So it literally describes a newspaper that appears weekly.
EXAMPLE
Diese bekannte Wochenzeitung erscheint immer donnerstags.
This well-known weekly newspaper always comes out on Thursdays.
Typical verbs
As with other media, the most common verbs are 'lesen' (to read), 'kaufen' (to buy), and 'abonnieren' (to subscribe to). A subscription to a newspaper is called 'ein Abo' for short.
EXAMPLE
Mein Vater hat seit Jahren dieselbe Wochenzeitung abonniert.
My father has subscribed to the same weekly newspaper for years.
Use with 'in'
To express that a piece of information comes from a newspaper, you use the preposition 'in' with the dative. So you say: 'etwas steht in der Wochenzeitung' (something is in the weekly newspaper) or 'ich habe etwas in der Wochenzeitung gelesen' (I read something in the weekly newspaper).
EXAMPLE
In der Wochenzeitung stand ein interessanter Artikel über den Klimawandel.
There was an interesting article about climate change in the weekly newspaper.

Wochenzeitung vs Zeitung
newspaper
'die Zeitung' and 'die Wochenzeitung' both belong to the area of news and reports. 'Zeitung' is the general term and can refer to publications that appear in different ways. A 'Wochenzeitung' is published only once a week and often offers longer texts, background information, and commentary. Learners may confuse the words because a weekly newspaper is also a newspaper. If the fact that it appears once a week is important, say 'Wochenzeitung'. If that is not important, or if you are speaking generally, 'Zeitung' is more natural.
Wochenzeitung
Ich lese am Sonntag eine Wochenzeitung, weil die Artikel dort ausführlicher sind.
I read a weekly newspaper on Sundays because the articles there are more detailed.
Zeitung
Wenn ihr morgens Zeit habt, könnt ihr die Zeitung im Büro lesen.
If you have time in the morning, you can read the newspaper in the office.
