Usage tips
Word composition
The word is a simple and logical compound made up of 'der Zahn' (the tooth) and 'der Arzt' (the doctor). So it is literally a 'tooth doctor'.

Correct preposition
Pay attention to the prepositions: You go 'zum Zahnarzt' (to the dentist; direction, dative), and you are or have an appointment 'beim Zahnarzt' (at the dentist's; location, dative).
EXAMPLE
Ich gehe zweimal im Jahr zur Kontrolle zum Zahnarzt.
I go to the dentist for a checkup twice a year.
Typical collocations
Common phrases are 'einen Termin beim Zahnarzt machen' (to make an appointment with the dentist), 'zum Zahnarzt gehen müssen' (to have to go to the dentist), or 'in zahnärztlicher Behandlung sein' (to be receiving dental treatment).
EXAMPLE
Ich muss anrufen und einen Termin beim Zahnarzt machen.
I have to call and make an appointment with the dentist.
