The word is a clear compound made up of 'die Zeit' (time) and 'die Maschine' (machine). So it literally describes a machine that has something to do with time, namely traveling through it.
Er träumte davon, eine eigene Zeitmaschine zu erfinden.
He dreamed of inventing his own time machine.
In connection with a 'Zeitmaschine' (time machine), the verbs 'reisen' (to travel), 'bauen' (to build), or 'erfinden' (to invent) are often used. You also get 'in' (into) a time machine.
Wenn ich eine Zeitmaschine hätte, würde ich ins alte Rom reisen.
If I had a time machine, I would travel to ancient Rome.
To describe the act of traveling, you use 'mit der Zeitmaschine' (by time machine / with the time machine). The destination of the trip is given with 'in die Zukunft' (into the future) or 'in die Vergangenheit' (into the past).
Mit seiner Zeitmaschine reiste er 100 Jahre in die Zukunft.
With his time machine, he traveled 100 years into the future.
